The couple, Nytavia Ragsdale and Laron Modlin, have been indicted for second-degree murder after their son Jahmeik Modlin starved to death, highlighting severe neglect.
Prosecutors revealed that Jahmeik weighed only 19 pounds at death while his siblings were also malnourished, indicating a prolonged neglect lasting approximately two years.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. stated that the case illustrates extreme abuse and indifference to life, marking Jahmeik's death as a societal failure.
Despite substantial history with the Administration for Children's Services, the family's last case was closed in 2022, suggesting systemic failures in child protection.
