Northeast hit with icy winter storm with another snowstorm on the way
Briefly

A winter storm affected New England on Thursday, bringing a mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to several regions. The impacts varied, with New York City experiencing mainly sleet, while areas north and west were forecasted to receive up to several inches of snow. The storm caused difficult commuting conditions and prompted Ice Storm Warnings in the Appalachians, where power outages were likely. A second, potentially stronger storm is anticipated this weekend, raising alerts across the Northeast and resulting in school closures or delays.
New York City primarily saw sleet and some snow, but areas north, like New England, could see numerous inches of snow, especially north of Interstate 90.
The worst icing occurred across the Appalachians, where Ice Storm Warnings are in effect, warning of potential power outages and tree damage.
Meteorologist Michael Estime commented, "Definitely much more like what Punxsutawney Phil said. Six more weeks of winter, and boy, we are in the thick of it right now."
A second, stronger storm is expected this weekend, prompting alerts across the Northeast and impacting many schools with closures or delays.
