The MTA is promoting early success of its congestion pricing plan, showcasing a decrease in vehicle traffic within the charged zone and improved travel times. Deputy Chief Juliette Michaelson highlighted that the number of vehicles entering the zone has significantly decreased from 583,000 to 490,000. This plan seems to be directing more commuters to public transit and staggered travel times. However, the agency awaits further data on revenue from the tolls and their effects on air quality before drawing concrete conclusions.
"On an average January weekday, about 583,000 vehicles enter the congestion zone - but this month, that fell to 490,000," she said. "We're spreading traffic away from the busiest period."
"I’m very happy to say what we studied, what we expected and what we planned for is what seems to be happening," she said, adding the rollout has been "very smooth."
