Trevor Bickford, 20, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault after driving from Maine to New York City to carry out the attack in the name of jihad, radicalized by online videos.
Bickford, expressing sorrow and understanding the difficulty of seeking forgiveness, attacked three NYPD officers with a machete, causing serious injuries including a fractured skull.
During the sentencing, Bickford, cuffed with hands behind his back, faced the court and the officers he attacked, as well as their families and supporters seated in the courtroom.
The attack highlighted the serious consequences of online radicalization, leading to a 27-year prison term for Bickford, who pled guilty and expressed remorse for his actions.
