Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Two on Third. Ave Corridor Eric Adams Refuses to Make Safer - Streetsblog New York City
Briefly

A motorist struck and killed two pedestrians in Brooklyn early on Friday. The incident occurred on a known dangerous roadway where safety upgrades have been stalled. The driver, who fled the scene, hit two men, aged 59 and 80, at 4:22 a.m. The city had long planned for a safety overhaul but delayed it due to opposition from the business community. Since this delay, 96 crashes have occurred, injuring numerous individuals. A proposed redesign aimed to enhance safety but has faced significant pushback from local businesses that claim it would be disruptive.
The driver fatally hit the two men, ages 59 and 80, at 52nd Street in Sunset Park around 4:22 a.m. and fled the scene, according to an NYPD spokesman.
Since Adams's intervention, there have been 96 reported crashes along the corridor, injuring 80 people - more than four per week - including five people on bikes and three pedestrians.
The Department of Transportation's redesign proposal consisted of a 'road diet' that would have cut the number of car lanes down from three in each direction to two.
Local Community Board 7 endorsed the road diet in early 2024 nearly unanimously, but Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce CEO Randy Peers showed up to dress down the civic volunteers.
