Firefighters are working to contain a massive gas line rupture in the Bronx, which created a devastating explosion that caused strong odors and led to evacuations.
The gas main erupted shortly after 9 a.m., sending thick, noxious fumes into the air, with commuters on the 4 train noticing the foul smell from four stops away.
Witnesses described the sound of the explosion as reminiscent of a helicopter landing, prompting panic and a hasty evacuation of around 200 parishioners from a nearby church.
Emergency responders evacuated nearby buildings to prevent injuries, although several individuals still experienced health issues due to the overwhelming gas smell.
