A Proposal and a Wedding Date That Were Suddenly Moved Up
Briefly

Josephine Adel Nett and Grace Elena Chun Duncan, a couple for over four years, envisioned their future including a wedding in 2026. However, after the unexpected election outcome in November 2020, Ms. Nett felt their marriage rights were at risk under the new administration. This compelled her to propose a wedding before Inauguration Day. They decided on San Francisco's City Hall for the ceremony, highlighting their urgency in securing legal recognition of their relationship amidst political uncertainties.
On the night of Nov. 5, before the election was even called, Ms. Nett abruptly changed her mind. ‘I'm gonna throw up,’ she texted Ms. Duncan.
Ms. Nett said she fears for the rights of same-sex couples to marry under the new administration, insisting they must marry before Inauguration Day.
After hours of its website functioning slowly because of high traffic, she found a slot at San Francisco’s majestic City Hall for their wedding.
They envisioned a future together, including a 2026 wedding and starting a family in 2028, but the election results prompted a hasty decision.
