Is this Alex Ovechkin's last season as a Capital? 'We'll see.'
"Ovechkin met with the media Thursday on the first day of training camp for the Washington Capitals, the day after his 40th birthday and the beginning of his 21st season in the NHL. Though Ovechkin left practice early to be evaluated for a lower-body injury, Washington Coach Spencer Carbery called it "precautionary" and Ovechkin seemed unconcerned; Carbery said he's day-to-day."
"I'll probably be standing up here and taking it in on Day 1 or something. It's so impressive. I'm 31 and it's hard. It takes a toll on the body. All of us, we just play as long as we can. He's the GOAT. He can just keep playing and scoring goals. He's still flying out there. It's pretty darn impressive, just his mentality and his physical perseverance to keep going and doing what he's doing. There's really no words to describe it."
Alex Ovechkin begins his 21st NHL season the day after his 40th birthday. He expressed uncertainty about retirement, saying "we'll see what's going to happen." He exited practice early for evaluation of a lower-body injury that coach Spencer Carbery called "precautionary" and described as day-to-day. The five-year contract signed in 2021 expires next summer, potentially making this season his last with the Capitals. He has expressed interest in playing for Dynamo Moscow in the KHL before final retirement. Teammate Tom Wilson praised Ovechkin's longevity and scoring ability at age 40. Ovechkin scored 44 goals last season despite missing 16 games with a fractured leg.
