Skylight, a startup aiming to compete with TikTok, is launching its mobile app after ten weeks of development. Supported by Mark Cuban, it utilizes the AT Protocol, connecting to Bluesky’s network of 33.8 million users. The app offers features like video editing, user profiles, and engagement tools. Co-founders Tori White and Reed Hermeyer were motivated to create Skylight due to the potential TikTok ban and their desire to preserve their community online. Skylight exemplifies the growing trend of decentralized social apps built on the AT Protocol.
"The first thing that interested us about atproto was that Bluesky was not failing. We didn't see the 'fail whale,'" Hermeyer told TechCrunch at the ATmosphere Conference.
"TikTok's potential ban inspired us to create Skylight, as I feared losing access to my community and comments if it happened," White shared.
