Andrew Nicol, a Harvard Law School graduate, transitioned from a successful legal career to entrepreneurship by launching Element Brooklyn, a fragrance startup. Initially earning $180,000 annually as a lawyer, Nicol sought a closer connection to business strategy and decided to pursue entrepreneurship despite the inherent risks. His initial venture, TripExpert, succeeded but was impacted by the pandemic, leading him to explore new opportunities. Nicol's bold decision to leave the security of his legal career has proven fruitful, as Element Brooklyn reported over $2 million in revenue last year.
After a few years in law that he described as interesting, educational and lucrative, he started out at an annual rate of $180,000 per year, plus bonuses.
I needed to find a way where I could get closer to that than just providing legal advice to clients. And the closest way I could think of doing that would be to become an entrepreneur.
I went from making a really, really comfortable – maybe even more than comfortable – living, to not knowing where my next paycheck was coming from.
Element Brooklyn brought in more than $2 million in revenue last year, according to Nicol. Here's why he decided to leave the law behind in favor of hand soaps and candles.
