The city is set to enhance Third Avenue's complete street design by replacing car lanes with a protected bike and bus lane, extending south from the Queensboro Bridge. This effort reduces the number of moving car lanes while creating a continuous 5.2-mile corridor for cyclists and improved bus speeds from Kips Bay to East Harlem. The project aims to better allocate road space to accommodate the needs of all roadway users, with wider bike lanes for e-bikes and painted sidewalk extensions to manage high pedestrian traffic.
The proposal will reduce the roadway from six or seven lanes for car movement to three moving lanes, two parking lanes, a bus lane, and a bike lane.
The safety-boosting layout will stretch for 5.2 miles of the East Side corridor, creating a protected northbound path for cyclists, while calming traffic from Kips Bay to East Harlem.
