Staten Island Speed Camera Defacer, a Recidivist Reckless Driver, Has Charges Dropped by Sympathetic DA - Streetsblog New York City
Briefly

Scott LoBaido, a MAGA activist from Staten Island, faced charges for obstructing speed cameras using fake flowers. His case was dismissed by District Attorney Michael McMahon, who sympathized with the activist's frustrations over the pervasive speed cameras in Staten Island, suggesting that such actions were not grave crimes. LoBaido's mock 'beautification project' aimed at protesting what he considered an excessive number of traffic enforcement cameras in the borough. Legal experts criticized the leniency shown in dismissing the charges, emphasizing the importance of speed camera compliance for public safety.
"Like most Staten Islanders, I loathe the omnipresence of speed cameras, of which we seem to have way more than our fair share compared to the other boroughs," the otherwise law-and-order McMahon said in a statement to Streetsblog.
"This doesn't give me, Staten Island's District Attorney, nor any other resident of our borough, the right to intentionally disrupt their operation and decide what functions of our local government are allowed to exist and which do not," said District Attorney Michael McMahon.
One legal expert pointed out that McMahon's support for a dismissal of the charges against LoBaido is a clear example of the legal system minimizing the importance of a crime committed by a driver.
LoBaido's actions were not 'the crime of the century' and reflect a growing sentiment among Staten Islanders frustrated with speed cameras.
