New York City is showcasing its initiative to create a climate-friendly vehicle fleet, featuring recent additions such as electric paramedic cruisers and biodiesel ambulances. A local law mandates the switch to electric vehicles by 2035 for light and medium-duty vehicles and by 2038 for trucks. Currently, over 75% of the cityâs municipal vehicles use hybrid or renewable fuel. Despite challenges, officials remain committed to this electrification effort, particularly in fire and emergency medical services, while acknowledging regulatory hurdles from state and federal levels.
We're trying to electrify the city fleet in all its aspects,' said Keith Kerman, Deputy Commissioner at the Department of Citywide Administrative Services. 'One of the most difficult, challenging places to do that is going to be in fire services, emergency medical services, [with] extraordinarily complicated equipment [and] very difficult response requirements.
Our fleet is a big part of what we are focused on, and getting to emergencies quickly with the most state-of-the-art technology is vital for our response effort,' Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker stated.
