A significant sinkhole opened on Interstate 287 in New Jersey, shutting down three lanes of traffic, just days after another appeared on I-80. GOP Assemblyman Brian Bergen criticized the state's infrastructure management, warning of potential injuries if quick repairs aren't made. With three sinkholes occurring since December, the situation has prompted US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to plan a visit, emphasizing the urgent need for improved infrastructure as traffic disruptions continue to affect commuters in the region.
"This is getting ridiculous, and it's only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured or dies as a result of one of these sinkholes," GOP state Assemblyman Brian Bergen told the outlet.
"We need swift action by the DOT to fix these issues. Going forward, NJ should spend less money on wackadoodle liberal initiatives and more money on shoring up our vital infrastructure."
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is expected to visit Morris County - where the sinkholes have plagued travelers - to meet with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Rep. Thomas Kean about the decimated state highways Saturday.
The swallowed-up roadway appeared on the left shoulder, and officials were investigating, according to NorthJersey.com.
