Starting Sunday, NYC's Queensboro Bridge is set to unveil new dedicated lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, rectifying a longstanding issue of congestion. The previous shared lane was cramped, forcing thousands into a single 11-foot space. The north lane will be bike-only, while the south lane transitions to a pedestrian path. This upgrade, delayed for over five years, marks a vital safety improvement and reflects the city's commitment to expanding cycling infrastructure amid increasing bike usage, with 2.1 million trips logged last year compared to 1.2 million in 2019.
After years of advocacy, many of us were excited to see [the city's Department of Transportation] complete the work to open new, dedicated pedestrian paths on the Queensboro Bridge.
By reclaiming the south outer roadway for pedestrians, we're helping create comfortable connections for the growing number of pedestrians and cyclists on the bridge.
