Nassau County has received federal approval to allow local police to detain undocumented immigrants, replacing ICE agents when needed. This initiative targets immigrants with criminal records and aims to bolster deportation efforts under the Trump administration. While the county allows temporary holding of suspected illegal immigrants in designated jail cells, the New York Civil Liberties Union has criticized the plan, arguing it jeopardizes public safety by fostering distrust between immigrant communities and local law enforcement. This makes reporting crimes harder and could diminish overall community safety.
This program is about illegal migrants who have committed crimes. This isn't about raids. This is targeted enforcement of our laws based here in the state of New York.
Most New York counties do not partner with ICE for a reason: when local law enforcement act like ICE agents, they take on ICE's reputation and sow deep distrust within the community.
