Mexico City mayor's personal secretary, adviser shot dead in morning ambush
Briefly

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada has pledged a continued commitment to fight against insecurity after the deadly shooting of her top aides, Ximena Guzman and Jose Munoz. This incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by public officials in Mexico, particularly given the country's alarming murder rate linked to drug cartel violence. While political murders are uncommon in the capital, there is a growing struggle for territorial control among criminal groups. Both Brugada and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have emphasized their commitment to justice and support for the victims' families.
Investigating, clarifying and ensuring there is no impunity is our commitment, Brugada said during a news conference.
The reasons for this one are still unknown. But there are powerful criminal groups in the capital fighting for territory and control of lucrative rackets, Holman said.
We express our solidarity and support for the families of these two individuals who have worked in our movement for a long time, Sheinbaum said.
Despite relative security in Mexico City, its murder rates remain high, predominantly due to the violence driven by drug cartels.
