Assembly Member Catalina Cruz has introduced the "Protect Immigrants, Defend NY" legislative package to safeguard immigrant New Yorkers from increased threats stemming from the Trump Administration. This initiative includes bills aimed at preventing ICE raids in schools, addressing legal scams, and managing unjust court proceedings. Cruz, a former DREAMer and strong advocate for immigrant rights from a diverse district, criticized Mayor Eric Adams for weakening sanctuary protections and emphasized the need for state-level action to ensure justice and protection for immigrants amidst ongoing federal challenges.
Cruz stated, "We cannot wait for leadership from City Hall—we must take action at the state level to ensure that New York remains a place of protection and justice."
Cruz had previously criticized the Mayor for undermining sanctuary city principles, stating, "Last month, Adams announced that he would sign an executive order allowing ICE agents into the Rikers Island jail complex, marking a significant shift in New York's sanctuary city policies."
