A group of 57 parents demonstrated outside the Department of Education for 24 hours, protesting the scarcity of suitable school placements for children with special educational needs (SEN) in Ireland. Organiser Charlotte Cahill, whose daughter Cyra suffers from autism and epilepsy, stressed the violation of human rights as per the UN Convention. Another parent shared her struggles with school rejections for her son, emphasizing feelings of helplessness while navigating challenges like homelessness and health issues. This rally reflects broader frustrations over educational access and inclusivity for SEN children.
This is not just unfair, this is a violation of your basic human rights. Article 24 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities guarantees every child the right to an inclusive education.
I am here firstly to support all the other parents because I understand what they are going through. And also, to fight for my child because he is turning nine soon.
