Nearly 1,000 nurses at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn threaten to strike on March 1 unless the management agrees to enhance staffing and provide competitive salaries. According to UFT spokesperson Alison Gendar, the hospital has been violating nurse-to-patient ratios as per their contract and state law. UFT President Michael Mulgrew criticized the hospital for prioritizing its public image, highlighted by a recent expensive Super Bowl ad, over the welfare of its nursing staff and patients. The hospital reported a significant operating surplus, which raises further concerns for striking nurses.
The hospital has put patients and nurses at risk with its chronic understaffing," said Anne Goldman, head of the Federation of Nurses/UFT.
Peel back NYU's pretty purple veneer, and the reality is not so pretty," Mulgrew said.
The hospital routinely violates the minimum nurse-to-patient ratios established in the current contract and through a nurse staffing law the state passed in 2021," said UFT spokesperson Alison Gendar.
The health system remains committed to bargaining in good faith and is optimistic that we will reach an agreement that supports our nurses and NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn's mission to provide exceptional outcomes to all of our patients," said Steve Ritea.
