After a childhood spent shuttling between divorced parents, my relationship with my father (with whom I never lived full time) became rote and dreaded as I matured into adulthood.Not only did I recognize he was a deeply unhappy person with addiction issues which occasionally placed me in danger, I was always bothered by his racist, misogynistic and homophobic jokes.
