Eight individuals, including a mother and her three children, were arrested by ICE agents at a New York farm, prompting Governor Hochul to demand their return. Following the arrests, the children were transported to a detention facility in Texas, raising concerns in the local community and among school officials about the impact on the children's education and emotional well-being. Critics of the operation, including immigrant rights activists, condemned the actions, particularly noting the lack of a judicial warrant for the arrests, emphasizing their distressing nature and its implications on American values.
"There is absolutely no justification for masked ICE agents to rip an innocent family - including a child in the third grade - from their home," Hochul wrote on X.
"These kids are part of the fabric of our school community, their classmates, their friends. They are great students and we want them back here," Sackets Harbor Central School District Superintendent Jennifer Gaffney said.
"It is horrifying that these children and their mother were snatched from their home and disappeared. This egregious action in Tom Homan's backyard is an affront to America’s values."
