East Flatbush school sees safety upgrades following a bus crash that injured student and mother
Briefly

Following a bus crash that injured an 8-year-old student and their mother outside Cortelyou Academy in East Flatbush, the school has enacted safety upgrades. The community rallied together to petition for better street safety measures at the dangerous intersection of Bedford Avenue and Farragut Road. With support from parents and local officials, including Council Member Farah Louis, a school crossing guard is now stationed outside the school during rush hours. This effort marks a significant step towards improving safety for students at the academy.
It’s been a community effort, kind of grassroots, and we’re just glad that the congresswoman, the councilwoman, everyone kind of came to answer our requests and prayers.
Technically the city does not provide crossing guards to private institutions. So that’s why we spoke directly with the commissioner’s office, and we said it’s a necessity for this particular area.
