Brooklyn Museum Layoffs Avoided With Union Deal
Briefly

The Brooklyn Museum has reached an agreement to provide voluntary separation and retirement packages to unionized employees initially targeted for layoffs due to a $10 million budget shortfall. The packages include three weeks of pay for each year of service, a reference letter, and four months of COBRA health insurance. While no layoffs will occur for union members, it remains unclear how non-unionized staff will be affected. The agreement highlights the power of union advocacy in negotiating terms that protect workers' rights.
We secured an agreement that is fair and results in no layoffs for our members, said DC37 executive director Henry Garrido, in a statement. The outcome of these negotiations is a testament to the power of union representation - when we fight together, we win.
The package will only be offered to the 40 affected employees who were represented by either DC37 or UAW Local 2110; a museum spokesperson confirmed.
