A Gigantic Spring Break Fever Dream Lands in the Seaport
Briefly

Grupo Gitano is set to launch a permanent location in the South Street Seaport on March 6, replacing the closed Momofuku Ssäm Bar. This new establishment boasts a vast 14,000 square-foot space with a two-story layout featuring high ceilings and a club. The founder, James Gardner, aims to deliver a vibrant and extravagant dining experience. The restaurant has previously operated as a pop-up in New York City and attracts attention despite past health violations. Gitano's opening is part of a trend with large-scale restaurant launches in NYC amidst rising operational challenges.
Founder U.K. native James Gardner, who has noted his love of disco balls, told Eater that they intend to deliver a more over-the-top experience in the permanent home with a signature jungle motif.
This isn't Gitano's first time in New York City. Founded in Tulum, the restaurant ran a summer pop-up in 2018 and 2019. Former Eater NY critic Robert Sietsema was not a fan, but the pop-up had celebrity cache.
Gitano joins a handful of gigantic New York City restaurants that have opened over the past few months - striking considering the rising costs of real estate and the difficulty restaurants say they're having with staffing.
The new restaurant opens in the Seaport on Pier 17 [...] and includes the main dining room with 30-foot ceilings and the second floor with the club.
