Mexico City lawmakers ban violent bullfighting, sparking fury and joy
Briefly

Mexico City's legislature voted 61-1 to ban bullfighting, prohibiting the killing of bulls and the use of injurious sharp objects. This law, part of the 'bullfighting without violence' initiative, aims to limit the duration bulls can spend in the ring. The decision has sparked passionate protests from bullfighting enthusiasts while activists celebrated the ruling as a significant victory for animal rights. Mayor Clara Brugada highlighted the legislation as a move towards respecting animal rights in the capital, amid ongoing debates about the tradition's future in Latin America.
"It was either this or nothing," said Sofía Morín, an animal rights activist with the organisation Culture Without Torture, Mexico Without Bullfighting, leading the initiative to change the laws.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada of the ruling Morena party echoed activists saying the decision would turn the Mexican capital into a place, "that respects the rights of animals."
