Mountain View is initiating a $6 million pilot project to transform a 1.4-mile segment of California Street by adding protected bike lanes and high-visibility crosswalks. The construction, expected to complete by fall, involves reducing traffic lanes from two to one in each direction, making room for safety enhancements. The project aims to boost sustainability, enhance safety for cyclists and pedestrians, and is targeted at eliminating severe injuries and fatalities. Additional features include protected intersections, bulb-outs, and midblock crossings to further improve pedestrian safety.
The city plans to reduce driving lanes from two to one in each direction to make room for protected bike lanes, high-visibility crosswalks, and other safety improvements.
According to the city's website, the project is meant "to enhance safety, eliminate fatal or severe injury crashes, and increase the number of sustainable trips."
