Cheasarack Chong, identified as the suspect who shot dispensary owner Martin Olive, struggled with mental illness and had lost contact with his family for years. His family, devastated by his actions, highlighted his vulnerability and past struggles. Olive is currently in intensive care after being shot multiple times, with some bullet fragments too risky to remove. Despite his injuries, Olive remains in good spirits. During the standoff, police reached out to Chong's family in an effort to persuade him to surrender, but their attempts were unsuccessful.
"He left home years ago for a better life in San Francisco," said one brother, Tee Chong.
"I don't know what made him do what he did but I'm heartbroken, and the rest of my family is as well."
"He has the mind set of a child," the post says. "He could be very vulnerable on the streets."
"He remains in good spirits, even earning a reputation as the hospital's most popular patient," Grace added.
