You'll Soon Need a Real ID to Fly - but Can You Use Your Passport Instead?
Briefly

Beginning May 7, 2025, all U.S. citizens aged 18 and older will require a Real ID or an approved alternative to board domestic flights. The Real ID, which ensures enhanced security and standardizes identification, was established following the 9/11 Commission's recommendations in 2005. Most driver's licenses issued since then should already be compliant. Identification cards that have a star at the top signify Real ID compliance. A valid U.S. passport can be used as an alternative for air travel if one does not have a Real ID.
The Real ID is a more secure, federally standardized driver's license or identification card, required for domestic air travel starting May 7, 2025.
You'll know if your driver's license or identification card is a Real ID if there is a star in the top portion of the card.
