The incident occurred outside a house on the narrow road at Bank Place in Rathkeale at around 12:15pm this afternoon, leaving the local community in shock.
Gardaí cordoned off the scene as a major investigation continued into the circumstances of the incident, particularly focusing on the movements of the silver Ford Transit van.
A Garda spokesman confirmed that the female pedestrian, aged in her 20s, was tragically pronounced deceased after being critically injured by the vehicle.
Local Fine Gael councillor Adam Teskey expressed that there is a profound sad numbness in the community, emphasizing that they are praying for the victim.
