Northern Rail has had its prosecutions overturned after a judge ruled the actions were not lawful. The company issued an apology for the errors made, acknowledging the issue affected tens of thousands of passengers.
Chief magistrate Paul Goldspring declared the prosecutions brought under the single justice procedure by Northern Rail as a nullity. He emphasized during a brief hearing that the convictions were probably unlawful and led to a significant number of people encountering legal repercussions.
A spokesman for Northern Rail mentioned, 'Customers affected by the issues raised in court will be contacted directly by HM Courts and Tribunal Service.' Furthermore, Northern stressed their commitment to treating all customers fairly and ensuring valid ticket usage.
After a ruling in August regarding seven train companies, Goldspring indicated that a coordinated effort will be made to identify affected individuals. Refunds for the overturned convictions are expected to be processed by November.
