Researchers at USC Viterbi's Information Sciences Institute uncovered thousands of X (formerly Twitter) and Telegram accounts collaborating to create artificial grassroots support for right-wing narratives, manipulating platform algorithms.
Through machine learning, the team identified coordinated campaigns among election-related accounts. Those campaigns displayed strikingly similar bios and sharing patterns, thus misleading users and the platforms.
The studies revealed a network of 19 X accounts promoting content from right-wing sources like Fox News, suggesting a deliberate effort to amplify partisan narratives through coordinated activity.
In another finding, 33 Telegram channels were documented sharing links to low-credibility right-wing sites, highlighting a concerning trend of misinformation propagation across social media platforms.
