The lawsuit, filed on Friday, comes in response to an executive order issued in August by Virginia's Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, which initiated the removal of individuals from voter registration rolls if officials could not verify citizenship.
The Justice Department contends that the executive order violates a 90-day quiet period of The National Voter Registration Act, which necessitates systematic voter removals at least three months before a federal election.
Assistant US Attorney General Kristen Clarke emphasized the importance of protecting voting rights, stating that, 'the right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy and the Justice Department will continue to ensure that the rights of qualified voters are protected.'
In a statement, Governor Youngkin defended his executive order, asserting it falls within legal bounds and calling the lawsuit 'a desperate attempt to attack the legitimacy of the elections in the Commonwealth.'
