Aidan, a once-prominent jockey with over 1,200 wins, faces personal struggles after a life-altering injury ended his racing career. After his fall, which resulted in serious leg injuries, Aidan has found it difficult to settle back in Ireland despite previous successes and a long-standing career. Compounded by a recent breakup with Una, Aidan expresses concerns over his life direction while recognizing others might be worse off. He acknowledges the challenges of transitioning from a professional sport to dealing with loss while contemplating a possible return to the UK, where he has more roots.
I am not a great sleeper at the best of times, but I am very worried about the fact that I moved back to Ireland six months ago but just couldn't settle here.
Around September I was kidding myself that I could get back from this, then around Christmas I had another operation and the progress has really plateaued.
There are so many people who are worse off than me. I keep telling myself that. But that's them and this is me.
