Towering art installation in downtown San Jose finally gets a new purpose

The Unzipped Gardens Roller Rink, a unique art installation in downtown San Jose, has transformed a once-mysterious structure into a vibrant roller rink and beer garden. Set to open weekends through Memorial Day, it features skate rentals, food trucks, and music from DJs and live bands. Rick Garcia, event producer manager, emphasized its aim to boost local businesses and community engagement. The installation, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, is made from stacked fiberglass frames and aligns with the cultural vibe of the surrounding SoFA district.
Ever since Canadian-based developer Westbank installed a towering art sculpture in a parking lot in downtown San Jose in 2021, it's been a point of curiosity for passersby.
Rick Garcia, the South Bay manager for event producer Non Plus Ultra, says the goal has been to create a community hub that adds to the vibe on South First Street.
