The Netherlands is addressing a housing shortage by adding 1 million units by 2030, including the innovative concept "Straatje Erbij" to utilize rural spaces effectively.
"Urban densification will likely provide the bulk of the additional units," stated Arjan Harbers, emphasizing the role of strategic additions to support shrinking rural populations.
PBL's analysis indicates that implementing the "Straatje Erbij" could bridge housing gaps in rural provinces and is a cost-effective alternative to mega developments.
"Each site would add an average of about 50 housing units spread over 8 acres," emphasizing the minimal disruption and efficiency of extending existing infrastructure.
