"It's the story of human creativity and interconnectivity, and it emerged from the need to elevate Sydney as an international cultural city," Matarese says.
"When people think of Australia, they think of Uluru, the koala, and the opera house," says Laura Matarese, heritage manager of the Sydney Opera House.
"The leaders of the project understood that culture and the arts were an important part of the fabric of society, and it all started from that point."
"Ultimately, the competition received 233 entries from 32 countries, showcasing the ambition to establish Sydney as a world-class capital of the arts."
