I ran to the pavement edge, whipped up the camera and managed to get a few frames as they sped past. I initially thought that the red colour on one of the horses was paint. Only when it got nearer did I realise it was blood. The only thing that was going through my mind was the colour of that horse, and just thinking that was a red I hadn't seen before, it was so rich.
It was all over in seconds, completely random, and we just managed to be in the right spot at the right time. It made the news very quickly - the horses had been on a training exercise at the barracks near Buckingham Palace, got spooked, thrown off their riders and bolted. Fortunately, they were safely caught.
