A UK high court has ruled that Google can continue to use the word "shorts" for its YouTube Shorts service, as it does not infringe on Shorts International's trademark.
Judge Michael Tappin emphasized that Google's use of "shorts" does not create a likelihood of confusion regarding the origin of the products, thereby allowing their continued use.
While the court acknowledged a link in consumer minds due to the trademarks' similarities, it concluded that Google's activities would not harm the distinctiveness of Shorts International's brand.
YouTube Shorts, launched in 2020, has garnered over 1.5 billion monthly users, reflecting the booming market for short video content, similar to platforms like TikTok.
