The LGBTQ + candidates running in 2024 are more diverse than ever: Victory Fund

The LGBTQ+ candidate pool in 2024 is significantly more diverse in terms of gender identity, sexual orientation, and race/ethnicity compared to 2020, with 15.2% identifying as transgender, nonbinary, or gender-nonconforming. However, cisgender men remain the majority, representing nearly 85% of the total.
For the first time, gay candidates represent less than half of the total at 49.2%. The number of candidates identifying as queer has more than doubled since 2020, showcasing a shift in representation within the LGBTQ+ community.
Among the racial and ethnic diversity in candidates, 37.6% are from nonwhite groups, rising from 30.9% in 2020. This increased representation still lags behind the overall U.S. population proportions.
Hispanic/Latine candidates lead as the largest nonwhite group at 14.1%. The number of candidates from various racial backgrounds, including Black/African American, Middle Eastern/Arab, and Asian American candidates also increased, reflecting greater inclusion.
