IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel announced the permanent expansion of the Direct File program, which allows over 30 million taxpayers to file their tax returns directly with the IRS for free without commercial software.
The pilot program that launched in 2024 allowed eligible taxpayers to submit simple W-2 returns, leading to over $90 million claimed in refunds.
New eligibility will include taxpayers with 1099 income and various tax credits, fostering broader access to Direct File in 2025 and beyond.
Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo highlighted that the U.S. is catching up with other countries that have offered direct tax filing to citizens for years.
