Stress in America is on the rise, particularly among college students and young adults facing unique challenges during turbulent times. The American Psychological Association found that 77% of adults cite concerns about the nation's future as a primary source of stress. Dr. Doris Iarovici notes that students are affected by 'snowplow parenting,' which shields them from challenges and undermines their ability to develop coping skills. This generation is also exposed to real threats, including active shooter drills and a divisive political landscape, which further amplify their stress.
Stress among college students is concerning, however, it does not appear to be fueled by any single reason, but by a range of pressures including societal threats.
More than 7 in 10 adults reported the future of our nation (77%) as a significant source of stress in their lives, making it the most common source of significant stress.
Dr. Iarovici added that taking over problem-solving for our children deprives them of necessary life skills, crucial for facing real challenges.
This generation is conscious of systemic inequities based on race, gender and other factors, further exacerbating their stress levels in contemporary society.
