South London woman forced to endure multiple surgeries before rare cancer found
Briefly

Emma Hodges, 28, faced multiple misdiagnoses for a lump in her groin, mistaking it for an abscess, blood clot, and cyst before receiving a cancer diagnosis. After seeing a GP and undergoing surgery, the lump continued to grow, leading to further complications and surgeries. Eventually, she was referred to a sarcoma specialist team, where she was diagnosed with a rare soft tissue Ewing sarcoma. Her case highlights the challenges in diagnosing uncommon forms of cancer and the importance of vigilance when symptoms change rapidly.
When I heard the word sarcoma, straight away I knew it was a form of cancer. I had heard of it because a girl in my town had sarcoma.
The GP felt it wasn't anything to worry about but agreed to refer her for a non-urgent scan to confirm this.
Ms Hodges woke from her surgery to be told that the surgeon had never seen anything like what she had, and neither had their colleagues.
