Matthew López, who adapted "Some Like It Hot" for the stage, recognized that beneath its comedic surface, the story offers significant insights into gender identity that resonate with contemporary audiences.
On adapting the film, López stated, "I thought, if I could get permission to not be obsequious to the source material, there is something fun here that could work in the 21st century."
Despite initial doubts about the adaptation, López credited the film's exploration of gender identity as a compelling reason to revisit the material, saying there was a seed of a conversation worth exploring.
After adapting the show for Broadway, which premiered in November 2022 with music by Marc Shaiman, López reflected that the show honors the original film while also allowing it to come into its own.
