"I'm calling it the paradox of 2024," Joint Venture Silicon Valley CEO Russell Hancock told San Jose Spotlight. "The paradox is that we have a growing economy and less need of space." He highlights a fundamental shift as companies adapt to a landscape where the demand for office space diminishes despite an overall economic growth, indicating a significant change in work culture and arrangement in Silicon Valley.
Hancock identified remote workers as those employed by Silicon Valley companies who reside outside the Bay Area and California. This is partially due to the escalating cost of living in the area, prompting many professionals to explore remote opportunities. The data shows that many are choosing to embrace remote work, marking a transition in workforce dynamics.
"Now people have found that they can have it both ways, with the high pay and the opportunities and changing the world," Hancock explained. "They can do that, and they can live in a house. They can do both." This underscores a growing trend among workers who are leveraging remote work options to improve their quality of life while maintaining high-paying careers.
The report compiles commercial real estate trends through the third quarter of 2024 in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, as well as Fremont and Newark. The data reveals that vacancy rates are on the rise across all sectors, highlighting the ongoing shifts in workplace utilization and preferences among employees.
