Santa Cruz still reeling from storm that crippled wharf, damaged harbor
Briefly

City officials confirmed that a 150-foot section of the Santa Cruz Wharf, currently under construction, collapsed into the sea due to extreme ocean swell, pulling three workers with it. Thankfully, all were rescued unharmed. Damage has also inflicted nearby boats and harbors. Unlike the section that fell, the remaining structure is still being assessed for integrity. Safety and rapid assessment remain the highest priority as crews begin data gathering for recovery.
Santa Cruz Superintendent of Parks and Recreation Mike Godsy noted after the collapse that the wharf section had been closed for repairs related to storm damage since late 2023. Given the ongoing work and vulnerabilities such as long pilings, conditions were ripe for a failure. Despite the incident, Godsy emphasized that it does not reflect the overall strength or integrity of the entire wharf.
