Santa Cruz Police arrested 19-year-old Panfilo Velasco Alvarez for felony arson after he allegedly set a fire behind the Town Clock in an attempt to clear brush for camping.
A Deputy Chief stated that police apprehended Velasco Alvarez covered in soot and water, who subsequently admitted to starting the fire to clear brush around his planned campsite.
In an unrelated arson case, officers arrested Gregorio Ayon, 45, who allegedly set a fire inside a hotel elevator, prompting the evacuation of the establishment.
The Santa Cruz Fire Department responded swiftly to the fire that threatened homes, managing to control it within half an hour, but arrests followed soon after.
