President Trump has announced Stargate, a new partnership between OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank aimed at developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) in the US. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that the project could lead to hundreds of thousands of jobs and may not have been possible without Trump's presidency. Despite the ambitious goals, Altman cautioned that AGI is still a distant objective, reassuring the public to temper expectations while promising exciting advancements to come.
Building AGI in the US would create "hundreds of thousands of jobs," Altman said at the press conference following Trump's Tuesday announcement.
I think with a different president it might not have been possible. But we are thrilled to get to do this, and I think it'll be great for Americans, great for the whole world.
I'm thrilled we get to do this in the United States of America. I think this will be the most important project of this era.
Altman wrote in an X post that OpenAI was 'not gonna deploy AGI next month, nor have we built it.'
