A majority in the parliament may change the law, which means that there will be new rules, but until that has happened, I think the Migration Agency is under an obligation to decide cases under existing laws.
The DN letter and statements made by Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch calling for a slowdown might even be illegal, if they are seen as an attempt by ministers to influence the agency.
Busch's statement will be analysed by the parliament's Committee on the Constitution in the spring, and she faces censure, even potentially a vote of no confidence as a result.
There are a number of new rules for citizenship in the works, including an extension to the residency requirement from five to eight years, as well as a civics test and self-sufficiency requirement.
