Popular Berkeley breakfast spot makes a surprising comeback after year-long closure
Briefly

Homemade Cafe, beloved in its community since 1979, is set to reopen thanks to an unexpected partnership between owner Collin Doran and his neighbor, Rohit Singh. After the cafe's sudden closure on January 1, 2024, Singh, learning about the closure while in India, quickly offered to take over the lease and collaborate with Doran. Despite the cafe's financial difficulties, including rising costs and shifts in dining patterns post-COVID, both men remain committed to revitalizing the cafe with the return of initiatives like Everybody Eats, which provided free meals to those in need.
I had tears in my eyes. I thought, 'How can this happen?' When he returned in February, he contacted Doran and asked if he could help save and restart the restaurant.
After we closed, I never thought we would come back, I went through the 12 stages of grief.
In 2023, we served about 5,000 Everyone Eats meals and an additional 40,000 regular meals.
Doran is grateful to Singh not only for his financial help, but also for the support of a collaborator.
